Getting to know Darkside hookahs

Darkside is a hookah maker from Russia. Its models share a stainless steel build and a clean, modern look, but they differ in how they draw, how they purge and how the stem meets the base. Working out which of those matters to you is the quickest way to choose.

Classic draw or diffuser?

• Classic draw, no diffuser: models such as the Mars, Hermes and Orion 1.0 give a traditional pull. The Mars and Hermes stand on a 59cm stem, the Hermes stem comes apart, and the Orion is a more compact design.
• With a diffuser: the PRO has a diffuser for a quieter, softer draw, and the EVO's diffuser comes off when you want a classic pull instead.
• Minimal and simple: the NEO is easy to assemble and pairs a classic draw with a horizontal circular purge.

Features worth comparing

• Magnetic hose connector: found on models such as the Mars, Orion, PRO and EVO, so the hose clicks on and off.
• Click systems: the Intro and EVO lock onto their base with a click. The Intro only works with the glass base it comes with.
• Built-in molasses catcher: the EVO stem catches juice before it reaches the base. For other models, add one from molasses catchers.

Setting it up

Questions

Which Darkside suits a beginner?

Darkside describe the NEO as suiting both beginners and experienced smokers, and its easy assembly helps. The Intro's click-lock system also makes setup simple.

Can I use a different base with a Darkside?

It depends on the model. The Intro can only be used with its own glass base, while the NEO and PRO come with the Darkside D-Glass base.

What does the diffuser change?

A diffuser breaks the smoke into smaller bubbles, so the draw is quieter and smoother. Without one you get a classic, more open pull.
