Japona Bowls

Choosing a Japona bowl

Japona bowls blend Japanese design with classic bowl shapes, and many are finished with worked textures and a leather cord around the foot. The real choice is how each one lets air through: a single central hole for heat management, or several holes for foil.

Shapes to know

  • Mummy: a red terracotta phunnel bowl with a central hole, designed for use with an HMD. 10.3cm tall, 8cm across, and holds 13g.
  • Turkish: 5 large holes in the bottom, with textures and a leather cord.
  • JS: a Turkish-style bowl with 4 large holes underneath.
  • Samurai: the popular Smoke Bowl shape, with textures and a leather cord.
  • Chasha: handcrafted natural clay with carved patterns and air channels shaped for smoke flow.

Bowls such as the Samurai and Mummy come as Lite, Pro or Max, so you can add heat management and coals at the same time. Colours vary by bowl, for example Black on the Mummy, Turkish and JS.

If you heat with a heat management device, pick a phunnel shape like the Mummy. Multi-hole bowls like the Turkish and JS are traditionally used with foil. Keep a spare grommet for a snug fit, and see Japona's own hookahs too.
