Charcoal - Instant Coal

Using instant light coals

Instant light coals catch from a lighter or match, so you don't need a burner or stove. That makes them handy outdoors or anywhere without a plug. They come in a few shapes and sizes, so match them to your bowl and how you heat it.

Discs or cubes?

  • Round discs and tablets are the classic instant light shape. Sizes vary, for example the Starbuzz Premium Coconut Instant Light discs at 35mm or 40mm, made from coconut shell and packed in rolls of 10, or the Three Kings tablets at 33mm, made in the Netherlands.
  • Instant light cubes, such as the One Nation Charbone Cube, are self-igniting coconut coals made for Kaloud Lotus or Brohood type heating systems.

Which size?

A larger disc gives more heat over a wider area, which suits a bigger bowl. A smaller one is easier to control on a compact bowl. If you use a heat management device, check what size and shape of coal it is made for.

Lighting them

Hold a disc with tongs and light the edge. Let it finish sparking and wait until it glows all over before it goes on your bowl. If you'd rather use natural cubes that need a steady heat, coconut coals are lit on a coal burner instead.

Light them over something that won't scorch, like a ceramic plate, and keep opened rolls sealed so they stay dry.

Questions

Do I need a burner for instant light coals?

No. They light from a lighter or match, which is why they suit sessions away from a plug.

What sizes do instant light coals come in?

Discs and tablets vary by brand, for example 33mm, 35mm or 40mm across. Check the size on each pack against your bowl or heat management device.

When is an instant light coal ready?

Once it has stopped sparking and glows all over. Putting it on the bowl too early can spoil the taste.
