Werkbund bowls: phunnel or traditional

Werkbund makes clay bowls in both main styles. The phunnels use a blend of three clays and go through three firings to stabilise and harden the bowl. The traditional bowls each have their own character.

Phunnel bowls

• Zeus Phunnel: no dyes are used in the plain Zeus, so the colour is the natural colour of the clays, and it holds 20 to 25g. Glazed versions such as Reptile hold about 18 to 22g and stand 12cm tall.
• Evo Deep and Evo Coral Phunnel: made to take attachments such as the Kaloud Lotus and Amy Smokebox, in colours such as Coral Turquoise or Crazy Blue.

Traditional bowls

• KMTM Turkish: unglazed, 8.5cm tall and milk cured to help with ghosting. It was made with a well-known Russian blogger and is suggested for dark Russian tobacco. Werkbund recommend a Kaloud or a grid for heat management.
• Gelato: shaped like an ice cream cone, with its own serial number on each bowl. The flavour builds as the session goes on, and it works well with a Kaloud-type device.

Questions

What is ghosting?

Ghosting is when a strong flavour lingers in a bowl and comes through in the next one. The KMTM Turkish is milk cured to help with this.

Glazed or unglazed?

Some Werkbund bowls, such as the Zeus Reptile, are glazed, while the KMTM Turkish is unglazed. Pick by the style you prefer and the tobacco you smoke most.

How much tobacco does a Zeus Phunnel hold?

The plain Zeus is listed at 20 to 25g, and the glazed Reptile at about 18 to 22g.
