Coal Burners Electric burners for natural coal

Shishagear X Series and Shisha Turbine burners, supplied with a UK 3-pin plug, and the parts that go with them.

Choosing a coal burner

Natural coconut coals need to be lit before they go on your bowl. A coal burner does this with electricity, so there is no lighter fluid, gas or smell, and most get coals glowing in 5 to 10 minutes.

Which type suits you?

  • Coil hot plate (for example the Shishagear X1): the coals sit on a tray over the coil. Simple, portable and easy to clean. Turn the coals halfway so they light evenly.
  • Cup stove (such as the Shishagear X2 and X3): the coil sits under a removable cup with a thermostat, so you can lift the cup and carry the coals to your hookah. The X3 has a larger tray for more coals.
  • Shisha Turbine: a German-made burner with a stainless steel heating spiral. Add the Booster and the heat also comes from above, so the coals no longer need turning. Parts such as the Next Spiral Replacement Coil and Protect & Care oil keep it in good condition.

How many coals?

Most bowls take 3 or 4 coconut cubes. If you light coals for more than one hookah, or smoke with friends, a burner with a bigger tray saves waiting for a second batch.

Getting the most from your burner

  • Coil burners work best in cycles of about 10 minutes. Let the coil cool between uses and it will last longer.
  • Use tongs to turn and move hot coals, and a coal basket to carry them.
  • Stand the burner on a heat-proof surface, away from anything that can burn, and unplug it after use.

Questions

Do I need to turn the coals?

On coil hot plates and cup stoves, yes: turn them halfway so every side glows. The Shisha Turbine Booster heats from above, so with it fitted you don't need to.

Can I use a burner for quick-light coals?

Burners are made for natural coconut coals, which need a steady heat to light. Quick-light coals are lit with a flame instead.
