Diffusers for a quieter draw

A diffuser breaks the smoke into smaller bubbles as it passes through the water, so the draw sounds quieter and feels softer. Each one is made to suit a particular hookah, so start with the model you own and look for its name in the title.

Built into the downstem

Some makers put the diffuser on the downstem itself. Wookah is a good example. The Wookah Downstem with a Demountable Diffuser lets you take the diffuser off if you prefer the standard Wookah sound, and the Wookah Mini Downstem with Diffuser is the removable downstem for the Mini's wooden body. Wookah makes them from 1.4301 (V2A) stainless steel, which is easy to wash and does not take on smells.

Diffusers that do more

Other designs add extra functions. The Steamulation Cooling Carbon Diffusor, for instance, uses four purge valves to cool the bowl, and you can adjust the blow-out volume and response. Finishes such as Gold Leaf let you match it to the rest of your Steamulation.

Before you choose

• Check the listing names your hookah. Fittings and downstem lengths differ from brand to brand.
• Think about the sound you like. A diffuser calms the bubbling, while taking it out gives a louder, more open draw.
• Rinse the diffuser after each session so residue does not block its small holes.

Questions

Will a diffuser fit my hookah?

Diffusers are made for their own brand, for example Wookah downstems for Wookah bodies and the Cooling Carbon Diffusor for Steamulation hookahs. Check your model before you choose.

Why would I take the Wookah diffuser out?

If you like the standard Wookah sound, remove it. Put it back when you want a soft, quiet draw.
