Accessories - Wind Covers

Keeping the wind off your coals

A wind cover sits over your bowl and coals. Outdoors it stops a breeze from flaring the coals or cooling them down. Indoors it holds the heat around the bowl, so it warms up sooner and the coals burn more evenly.

Hood, grid, mesh or shield?

  • Closed hoods (for example Wind Cover Hood Big Black P021 or Komin N4 Windcover Black): a solid cover over the bowl, often with slits or holes so air can still reach the coals.
  • Adjustable covers (such as the Conceptic Design Firewall or the Hoob Windcover): these let you change how much heat stays in, through side holes, a removable lid or stages of heat control.
  • Grids and meshes (for example Wind Cover Grid Silver or Embery MeshCover): an open metal cage that keeps draughts off, spreads the heat and stops a coal from falling if the hookah is knocked.
  • Tall covers for phunnel bowls (such as the Khalil Mamoon Quad Metal XL or the Egyptian Shisha Wind Cover): extra height for tall heads, sometimes with a side handle.
  • Lotus add-ons (for example the ESS screens for Kaloud Lotus): screens that clip onto the Lotus itself rather than sitting on the tray.

Using a wind cover well

  • A cover keeps more heat in, so you may need fewer coals or a shorter warm-up than you are used to. Start with less and add more if the smoke is thin.
  • Wind covers get very hot. Move them with charcoal tongs, never with your fingers.
  • If you smoke indoors and want finer heat control, a heat management device does a similar job with the coals held in place.

Questions

Will a wind cover fit my bowl?

Many covers have a universal fit, while grids often come in Small, standard and Big. Check the height and opening size on the listing against your bowl, especially if you use a tall phunnel.

Do I still need foil with a wind cover?

Yes, if your bowl is set up for foil. The cover goes over the coals and does not replace the foil or screen underneath them.

Can I use a wind cover with a Kaloud Lotus?

Some covers are made to clip onto the Lotus, such as the ESS screens. A standard hood sits on the tray instead, so check its height clears the Lotus.
