Choosing a hookah hose

Your hose affects how easily the shisha draws and how clean each flavour tastes. Most choices come down to material, length and whether you want a mouthpiece included.

Hose types

• Washable silicone: hoses such as the Shishagear Black Silicone Hose & Mouthpiece rinse clean with water and don't hold on to old flavours. Lengths vary, so check each one; the Sahara Smoke Silicone Hose, for example, is 74 inches.
• Designer silicone: Kaloud's Aeolis hoses use platinum-cured silicone with a wide inner diameter. Models like the Niris and Elyssar have rotating handles for easy passing, and handle lengths differ, such as 11 inches on the Nirvaya and 14 inches on the Elyssar.
• Classic hoses: Starbuzz makes several, for example the Maximus Super Washable Hose at 205.7cm with a thick 21-inch handle and a wide gauge, or the washable Aluminium hose at 182.9cm.
• Leather: Wookah Leather Hoses are hand-sewn natural leather over a silicone tube, about 150cm long, in colours such as Black and Brown.
• Disposable: a disposable hose like the Shishagear one is a light, universal spare for guests. Use it, then replace it.

Mouthpieces

Mouthpieces range from light aluminium (for example the Dschinni Ergo at 53g) to carbon (such as the Aeon Vyro 40cm or Cartel Zine) and stainless steel with epoxy (SERP). Most fit conventional silicone hoses, sold separately in silicone hoses. Some are made for one model: the Alpha X Sleeve & Mouthpiece Set is for the Alpha X, and the Aeon Vyro Penta Carbon Hybrid is made for the VYRO Penta. Questions

Will a hose fit my hookah?

Many are made to fit universally. The Starbuzz Maximus fits a traditional female hose port, and Wookah leather hoses don't include a hose connector.

How do I clean a silicone hose?

Rinse it with water after each session and let it dry. Silicone doesn't hold flavours, so it's ready for the next one.

Does a mouthpiece come with a hose?

Usually not. Most mouthpiece listings note that the silicone hose is sold separately, while sets like the Shishagear Black Silicone Hose & Mouthpiece include both.
