How Alpaca bowls differ

Each Alpaca design is built around one idea: a more open draw, no foil drag, or a neat fit with a heat management device. Work out which problem you want to solve, then pick the shape that answers it.

Alpaca's main designs

  • Suri: a wide gauge spire reduces restriction, so the draw stays open. It has come in finishes such as Red Grey and Orange Green.
  • Predator: a bridged phunnel spire lifts the foil from underneath, so the weight of your coals can't drag it down. It is 10.16cm tall and 6.35cm wide at the rim, with colourways such as Pink Chocolate.
  • Symphony: a handmade, glazed clay phunnel with a thick bridge across the spire, also there to stop foil drag. Look out for glazes like Ember and Salsa.
  • Egy: USA-made clay with a raised holed platform that forms a moat around the centre, so no juice is lost. Every Egy is made to fit the Kaloud Lotus, in finishes such as Unicorn and Fusion Paste.
  • Medium Apache: holds less shisha than the original Apache but lasts almost as long. Medium heat retention, about a minute to start up, and suggested for dark, medium or blonde tobacco.

What is foil drag?

On a single-channel phunnel bowl, too few holes in your foil means each pull draws the foil towards the centre until it blocks the airflow. Poke plenty of holes in your foil, or choose a bridged bowl like the Predator or Symphony. Prefer to go foil-free? Pair an Egy with a heat management device.

Questions

Which Alpaca bowl works with a Kaloud Lotus?

The Egy is made to fit the Kaloud Lotus. The Medium Apache is listed as not Kaloud compatible, so check each listing.

Which Alpaca bowls stop foil drag?

Bridged designs such as the Predator and Symphony. The bridge keeps the foil lifted, so it isn't pulled into the centre channel.

Is the Medium Apache smaller than the Apache?

Yes. It carries less shisha but lasts almost as long, and stands 10.16cm tall.
