Setting up with a coal bundle

A bundle puts the things you need to light and use natural coconut coals in one box. Most are built around a coal burner such as the X1 Coal Burner, so you can light coals at home without a flame. What comes with it depends on how you smoke.

Kinds of bundle

• Coal, tongs and burner: a box of coconut coal, such as Cocoloco 27mm or Black Cocos 26mm, with an Apple On Top Flip Tong and the burner. Some swap the box for a large lounge pack, for example the 20kg Shisko pack, if you get through a lot of coal.
• Heat management, coal and burner: a heat management device (HMD) that sits over your bowl, with coal to go in it. Examples include the Kaloud 1+ HMD with Quad Cut coal or the Bodo Grenade with Shisko coal. Some also add a bowl, such as the HKY Head Black.

Which one suits you?

• Happy with foil? A coal-and-tongs bundle covers lighting and handling.
• Want to move away from foil? A bundle with an HMD adds the device that holds the coals over your bowl.
• Check the coal size against your HMD. The Kaloud Lotus 1+ takes three standard 2.5cm cubes without breaking them, while the Bodo Grenade is designed to run on two 25mm coals.
• The 26mm or 27mm in a coal's name is the side length of each cube.

Questions

Do coal bundles come with tongs?

Many do, often an Apple On Top Flip Tong. Check the contents list on each bundle to see exactly what is in the box.

How many coals does the Bodo Grenade need?

It is designed to run on two 25mm coals.

Do I need to turn the coals on the X1?

Yes. The X1 is a coil hot plate, so turn the coals halfway through so every side glows.
