Charcoal Lounge Packs

Buying coals in bulk

If you smoke often or run sessions for a group, a large pack saves you reordering every few weeks. Lounge packs are usually natural coconut charcoal, so they need lighting on a burner or stove before use.

What to compare

  • Pack size: lounge packs come by weight, such as the 10kg Narine 25mm or the 20kg Narine 26mm, or by count, like Murano's 60 pieces. Pick the size you will get through while it is still fresh.
  • Cube size: for example 25mm, 26mm or 27mm. Keep to the size your bowl already likes.
  • What the maker says: Shisko, for instance, says its 27mm cubes glow for up to 2 hours with ash under 3%, while Narine and Murano point to coconut shell made for low ash and a clean burn.

Picking a cube size

The number is the length of one side of the cube. A slightly bigger cube holds a little more heat, so if you already know how many 25mm or 26mm coals your bowl likes, stick with that size and you will not need to relearn your setup.

Storing a large pack

  • Keep coals sealed and somewhere dry. Damp coals are harder to light.
  • Store them away from strong smells, as coal can pick them up.

Light them on one of our coal burners and carry them with a coal basket.

Questions

Do lounge pack coals light the same as smaller boxes?

Yes, they are the same natural coconut coals, just in a larger pack. Light them on a burner until every side glows.

How many cubes go on a bowl?

Most bowls take 3 or 4 cubes. Start with fewer and add one if the smoke is thin.
