For better heat regulation, the sieve was only half perforated. The perforation is used at the beginning for smoking. Then you can let the coals rest on the unperforated areas and the excess heat can escape through the holes. The risk that the tobacco burns in advance is thus very low and long smoking pleasure guaranteed.
